MEET TOM HUTCHINSON

Tom is a resident of Dorchester County and a Maryland State Delegate for District 37B. For the past 23 years, Tom has been an active citizen throughout the Eastern Shore. He is a business leader, entrepreneur, and advocate for his community.

Immediately upon his arrival in the area, Tom immersed himself in a variety of organizations focused on economic growth and prosperity. Most notable was Tom’s eight-year tenure as a member of the Board of Directors and subsequently as President of Cambridge Main Street. During his terms, the downtown district of Cambridge, Maryland underwent a significant transformation and has become a major tourist destination. Whether it is at a downtown street festival, leading a volunteer team to help beautify downtown, standing on a ladder to help hang Christmas wreaths and banners, or climbing a pile of bushel baskets to help build the iconic Cambridge Crab Basket Christmas Tree, Tom is always present and more than willing to “roll-up his sleeves” to get the job done.

Tom is very active and supports both Ironman Maryland and Ironman Eagleman 70.3 triathlons. Both events attract thousands of athletes and visitors from around the world and have a welcomed economic impact throughout District 37B of more than $5.0 million annually. In 2017, Tom completed Ironman Maryland which is a testament to his willingness to set a goal, work hard, and lead by example. He continues to be an energetic volunteer for both events.

Currently, Tom is an active member of the Dorchester Chamber of Commerce, the Cambridge Business Professional Group, and the Sons of The American Legion. He is currently a board member on the Eastern Shore Area Health Education Center. In addition, he is a past member of the Cambridge Economic Steering Committee, a past director of the Chesapeake College Foundation Board of Directors, a past Rotarian, and a former volunteer firefighter.

After 30 years leading the sales and marketing teams at various national healthcare analytic organizations, Tom decided in 2020 to convert his business, entrepreneurship, and craftsmanship skills to create Hutchinson Home Services LLC, providing quality home improvement services throughout the Eastern Shore. This decision has allowed Tom to become even more active and immersed in the community.

Tom earned his MBA at Loyola University of Maryland, Baltimore, MD, and his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science at Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA. He is also a graduate of Shore Leadership.

After being elected in 2022 as the State Delegate for District 37B, he has served on the Health and Government Operations Committee as well as on Public Health and Minority Health Disparities Sub-Committee and Health Occupations and Long-Term Care Sub-Committee.  As an active and respected member of the committees, he has made improving the quality of the health care, access to care, and reduction of Emergency Department wait times a priority for the residents of the Eastern Shore.

Tom resides in Cambridge, Maryland, along with his partner, Beth Hancock.  He has a daughter, Helen, who is currently attending the University of Edinburgh for her Master's Degree in GeoEnergy. He also enjoys spending time with Hallie, the family’s beautiful black Labrador Retriever, and boating, fishing, and crabbing on the beautiful Chesapeake Bay.
